Ford Escape: Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45 / Diagnosis and Testing - Diagnosis By Symptom

Symptom Chart

Diagnostics in this manual assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices.
REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).

NOTE: The inverter system controller (ISC) is called the SOBDMC in the scan tool.

In most circumstances the inverter system controller (ISC) sets a DTC to help guide with diagnostics. Before using the Symptom Chart,
REFER to: Automatic Transmission (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Diagnosis and Testing).
. The Condition column lists the vehicle condition. The Action column refers to a pinpoint test. Each pinpoint test lists the possible symptoms and the components that can cause each symptom. The components are listed in order of disassembly. Use the list of components and the required action to identify the root cause of the concern.

Condition Action
Rattle - occurs at idle or at light acceleration from a stop   GO to Pinpoint Test A
Whine - pitch increases with vehicle speed   GO to Pinpoint Test B
Clunk - occurs when shifting from PARK to a DRIVE or REVERSE position   GO to Pinpoint Test C
Bump - occurs when shifting from PARK to a DRIVE or REVERSE position. Similar to clunk but with no sound   GO to Pinpoint Test D
Groan, drone, and/or shudder of vehicle on moderate acceleration and/or during regen braking   GO to Pinpoint Test E
Whine noise during acceleration and deceleration with engine on or off   GO to Pinpoint Test F
Powertrain Droning Type Noise - ANC   GO to Pinpoint Test G

Pinpoint Tests

PINPOINT TEST A: RATTLE - OCCURS AT IDLE OR AT LIGHT ACCELERATION FROM A STOP

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

  • Damaged roll restrictor or transmission support insulators
    • CHECK the transmission insulators for damage. REFER to: Roll Restrictor RH (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).
or REFER to: Transmission Support Insulator (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • CARRY OUT the powertrain/drivetrain mount neutralizing procedure. REFER to: Powertrain/Drivetrain Mount Neutralizing (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).
  • Loose fender splash shield
    • CHECK for loose fasteners. Tighten to specification.

Possible Sources

  • Roll restrictor
  • Transmission support insulator
  • Fender splash shield
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or DTC.  REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
PINPOINT TEST B: WHINE - PITCH INCREASES WITH VEHICLE SPEED

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

  • Incorrect transmission fluid level
    • CHECK that the transmission is filled to the correct level. REFER to: Transmission Fluid Level Check (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, General Procedures).
  • Steering column boot or wiring harness grommets out of position.
    • CHECK the steering column boot and wiring harness grommets for correct installation.
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • CARRY OUT the powertrain/drivetrain mount neutralizing procedure. REFER to: Powertrain/Drivetrain Mount Neutralizing (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).

Possible Sources

  • Transmission fluid level
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or DTC.  REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
PINPOINT TEST C: CLUNK - OCCURS WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR REVERSE

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

  • Damaged transmission insulators
    • CHECK the transmission insulators for damage. REFER to: Roll Restrictor RH (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).
or REFER to: Transmission Support Insulator (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.
    • CARRY OUT the powertrain/drivetrain mount neutralizing procedure. REFER to: Powertrain/Drivetrain Mount Neutralizing (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).

Possible Sources

  • Roll restrictor
  • Transmission support insulator
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or DTC.  REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
PINPOINT TEST D: BUMP - OCCURS WHEN SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE OR REVERSE. SIMILAR TO CLUNK BUT WITH NO SOUND

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

  • Initial gear engagement
    • Acceptable condition.

Possible Sources

  • Internal transmission components
Diagnostic steps are not provided for this symptom or DTC.  REFER to: Diagnostic Methods (100-00 General Information, Description and Operation).
PINPOINT TEST E: GROAN, DRONE, AND/OR SHUDDER OF VEHICLE ON MODERATE ACCELERATION AND/OR DURING REGEN BRAKING

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

  • Transmission support grounding out to vehicle or damaged roll restrictor
    • Inspect mount for bonus bolt which may be lodged inside of mount. Inspect mount for damaged/ripped rubber.
    • If nothing is found visually, remove the mount to inspect for evidence of rubbing against the vehicle body. REFER to: Transmission Support Insulator (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).
    • Inspect the roll restrictor for worn or damaged bushings. REFER to: Roll Restrictor RH (307-01B Automatic Transmission - Automatic Transmission – HF45, Removal and Installation).
  • Powertrain mounts incorrectly installed or binding.

PINPOINT TEST F: WHINE NOISE DURING ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION WITH ENGINE ON OR OFF

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

  • Normal operation
    • Evaluate the customer vehicle with a similar vehicle to determine if the noise is caused by normal operation. Both vehicles need to be at operating temperature in order to compare NVH response.
